DISASTER SERVICES

It's the hardest work you'll never get paid to do. Being a Red Cross
Disaster Volunteer is exciting, interesting, exhausting and fun. Members
of Disaster Services can volunteer at the local level on either the Disaster
Action Team (DAT) or for only the largest local disasters - or both. We'll
provide the training - you provide your time and expertise. Our DAT is our
first line of response to single-family disasters, day or night. If the
disaster requires a larger response, the DAT contacts the chapter for additional
resources and the entire team jumps into action. We help people meet their
emergency needs of food, clothing, and a place to stay. We also assist
with the physical and mental health needs of disaster clients.

If you really like helping
people that are suffering under the worst of conditions, consider joining the national
disaster response team - the Disaster Services Human Resources (DSHR) System.
Volunteers just like you make themselves available for assignment to large national
disaster relief operations for three week assignments. Some critical
skills can opt for two week assignments. You will participate in
hurricane, tornado, earthquake, flood, or other large operations, joining other
members from across the country in an effort to help hundreds or thousands of
people.

In 2004, our DAT responded to the scene of a downed plane search and rescue operation.
More resources were needed. So canteen supplies were prepared and
additional volunteers were notified. Everyone responded to the scene and
helped feed and care for the rescue workers as they performed their duties.
Join US! If
helping during a disaster sounds interesting to you,
contact us. You can get started right away by taking the
Introduction to Disaster
Services training course online. After taking the Intro course, you
will have a better idea of the type of volunteer work you want to do and the
training course required to perform that function. Give us a call, or
contact us for more information on our training opportunities and schedule.
